About the book

“Machiavelli wrote for princes. This one is for us.”

Denry Okpor was born in Warri, Nigeria. After losing both of his parents, he came to London as a boy and went into foster care. At eighteen, he realised that nobody was coming to save him. At university, a mentor pointed him towards Machiavelli's The Prince, and for the first time he looked forward to facing the world. He went on to build businesses, including Sips Nail Spa & Bar, and to start again more than once.

No One Is Coming is the book he wishes someone had handed him at eighteen. It takes the hard lessons of The Prince and translates them for anyone who has had to raise themselves. In seven parts and 33 chapters, you'll learn how to:

  • stop caring about the things that keep you weak, and choose what deserves your energy
  • earn respect by being firm and fair, and set boundaries people take seriously
  • face the wounds you didn't choose and decide for yourself who you are
  • rebuild after a fall, quietly, one brick at a time
  • understand money when you grew up with none, from assets and credit to debt, saving and owning something of your own
  • choose your people, love without losing yourself, and break the cycle for the next generation
  • build the discipline to play the long game

Inside you'll also find:

  • Seven true stories from Denry's life, one opening each part
  • Street Rules and Questions to Sit With in every chapter, and a practical challenge at the end of every part
  • The Care Leaver's Field Guide: what nobody tells you at eighteen, from your pathway plan and personal adviser to bursaries and your money
  • The Rules at a Glance, and a guide for working through the book as a group

Who this book is for

Care leavers and young people still in care, anyone who grew up without a safety net, and anyone starting again. It's also for the mentors, youth workers, foster carers and social workers who want to understand life on the other side of the file.

Nobody is coming to save you. That also means nobody else gets to decide how your story ends.
